The Addis skatepark is open every day, but “Saturday in the morning is for the girls,” Challa says firmly. Challa started skating about five years ago. She was heading home from school—she was studying medicine in preparatory school at the time—with some friends when she first noticed a few boys in a parking lot in the Sarbet neighborhood of Addis Ababa. She approached them, and asked if she could try. She recalls that she was wearing a dress, and it ripped when she attempted to skate. The next day, she was back in the lot, waiting for a chance. “I was just following the boys,” Challa says. She soon became one of the only girls involved in Ethiopia Skate, a small non-profit that supports skateboarders throughout the country. Soon after she joined, the organization built the nation’s first official park. “I was so happy, proud, and very excited on the opening day,” Challa says, “I was the first and only woman from Ethiopia to skate the park.” Since then, Challa has played a role in building three other parks around Ethiopia, including the largest park, in Hawasa, a city south of Addis Ababa.
